What I love about Natick, Massachusetts – A Natick Picture Walk

Yesterday we had another big snow storm in Natick, Massachusetts. Snow totals for the area is at 60.3 inches of snow so far versus the last years season total of 35.7 inches. I’d guess that most would consider this a lot of snow but, for me, it’s just what New England is about and I say whatevah…. you could always move to Florida. With that being said, I enjoy the snow. Though, I do wish I was skiing instead of shoveling. Thankfully New England is prepared for such storms and basically roads/sidewalks are almost completely clear within a day. We have several ride-in snow removal machines for sidewalks and pedestrian access in town. They get cleared by the time the morning rolls around and life is basically unaffected.

Though, I have to say that I’m now starting to get used to this 25 degree weather. Murmuring under my breath, it feels kinda warm. I always find it amazing when I realize how cold it is and how it doesn’t feel as cold as it is. It just goes to prove that we’re able to adapt and function in diverse environments… such as a wedding day!

Here’s some images that I captured while taking a little photo walk yesterday. Sorta like taking time to smell the flowers. Oh.. a quick side note, as I was walking around yesterday I kept thinking this would be awesome with a bride and groom. So, I’m putting out my intention of capturing a couple in the snow. I’m here and ready! Let’s go and capture some great images!!

I just signed up for 3 days of fun at Mystic 5 (a smaller convention in the northeast for portrait and wedding photographers) in Jan 2010! I can’t wait to see Jerry Ghionis, Joe McNally, David Williams, John Michael Cooper (Alt F), David and Quin Cheung, Tricoast, Andy Marcus, Greg Gibson, Michelle Turner, George Weir, Jason Groupp, Storey Wilkins, Andrew Funderburg, Jerome Braga, and the one, the only, the supah suacey Stacey Doyle!!!! Take a look at the schedule, it’s amazing!

I attended Mystic 4 earlier this year and I have to say that I was very impressed with the setup. I had heard about Mystic 4 from the local photographers and they raved about it. I guess I was a bit renascent from attending the bigger conventions but, honestly.. I was blown away. The venue was sweet, the layout of the seminar room was astounding, the speakers were way cool, and offered a plethora of information.

Additionally, the hotel staff were way cool. No bs for shooting indoors, serving myriads of drinks to the wee hours, and tolerating our late night social scene with much patience.

I’d highly recommend Mystic as a regular gathering for those local and from far away. Great job Walter! You really impressed me!

Over the weekend I had a little recharge with my first ever group photo walk in Boston. I signed up in May and thought it would be a great opportunity to get out to explore Boston. The walk was created by Scott Kelby, the Photoshop guru and photographer. The photo walk from Boston harbor to the North End was led by Natick local Brad Moore, photographer extraordinaire. We started out at 9am at the ICA where pop artists Shepard Fairey has a sensational display of his sweet work. We slowly made our way through Boston and finally ended up at the Boston Beer Works at 12:30ish for some food and drinks. Here’s a few images from the world wide photo walk that I love.

TMZ’s Wacked Wedding Contest – The Finalists!!! – Vote for ME!!!

I saw a tweet this week on www.twitter.com via tweetdeck about TMZ’s Wacked Wedding Contest. They were looking for pictures that depicted the crazy antics at a wedding reception. Needless to say, I have my fair share of crazy moments at a wedding reception. I submitted a few pics from the wedding day but, one of the ones that stands out to me is the crazy bridesmaid at Sonia and Mark’s wedding. I guess a little bit of booze and a shovel can make people do some wacky stuff.

How do you ring in your 200th post? With the Bad Ass Maidens of Metal, Jaded!

I was introduced to Hillary the drummer of Jaded from a co-worker at the MathWorks. He asked me last Friday if I’ve ever shot band pictures. I answered, well no not yet but, I’m game. What’s the gig? He said that his cousin was in a metal band and was performing at the Hard Rock in Boston on Saturday night. I paused…. He said, they dress up in leather and chains. I replied, yeah, sounds like fun! Hillary and I connected squared away the 411 and I arrived Saturday night with some ambition and excitement. I was introduced to the rest of the band and I immediately scoped a location to shoot a group shot. I had like 5 minutes to pick my spot and make it work. I shot the group portrait and decided to stay to catch the show. They were opening up for LA Guns, a 80′s rock band as in a big hair band. I was stoked to see the ladies really knew how to bring the power of metal. Oh and did they! I shot some images while they were performing with the my rockin 5d. I used no flash and relied on the trusty 6400iso for all my shoots. I even captured a quick clip of video with the 5d and posted it to youtube. Here’s some of my favorite shots. Additionally, we setup a time to shoot next week to have a bit more time for a group portrait that will bring my creativity together with some seriously smokin performers. Stay tuned for the results!

Also, I shot some images of LA Guns. This was the first time I’ve seen them and though I remember them from high school, I can’t really say I knew a hell of a lot about them but, seriously, these guys rocked! I’ll post their images in the next week or so.

Boston Marathon 2009 from Natick, Massachusetts

Today was the 2nd time I shot the Boston Marathon from Natick, Massachusetts. The marathon experience in Natick is really exciting, emotional, and quite frankly, an life changing event. This year I woke up at 7am, packed my gear in my Smart Car, drove to Natick center, and started out my day with some Dunks! I walked around Natick center shooting images of the setup of the water stations, spectator lines, and support personnel. The first racers blazed through Natick shortly before 10am. The wheel chairs were first which to me is a one of the best highlights of the day. To even race in a wheel chair is a feat in itself. It only proves that people can overcome many things and succeed. The elite woman’s racers were next followed by the elite men’s racers. Both of these gr0ups are harder to shoot due to the enormous support vehicles surrounding them but, I managed to capture some images that I enjoy. The rest of the runners followed. I captured the Hoyt’s as they came through town and a few runners that had partial leg prosthetic. Amazing and inspiring! Here’s a few of the images that I processed so far and I’ll be posting more throughout the week. I’ll finish off with a gallery of all the images as I did last year. When my Smart Fortwo grows up will it be a Nissan GTR?

I hope so! As some of you may know, I’m a bit of a car geek. I don’t own but, one car but, I truly love spending time with fast cars and capturing them with my camera. I parked next to this sweet Nissan GTR the other day to cover a shoot at Tufts University. Putting the Smart Fortwo next to the GTR I’m surprised with some of the design elements. I mean my Smart is hardly a GTR but, maybe someday I’ll get a client who will bring one along for an engagement shoot. Besides the GTR is about 4 times more expensive than my Smart Fortwo but, I have a convertible and it can be lowered at any speed which is pretty darn cool.

Barack Obama’s Win in Boston – Fairmount Copley, Boston

I attended the Barack Obama celebration party last night at the Fairmount Copley in Boston. It was a fantastic event with people from every race, creed, and color. The event had scores of media there broadcasting live and interviewing the crowd. I was simply there to enjoy the company and document this historic day in history. I was amazed at how diverse the crowd was. I was amazed at the out pouring of emotion, the absolute happiness, and the optimism for change. After the celebration ended at the Fairmount Copley people started gathering in the streets and celebrating. It was amazing! I truly felt an overwhelming joy and happiness with my fellow Bostonians! We Barack’d the Vote!

On an additional note, I so wish that I pursued photojournalism after high school. I feel so connected when I document events and it brings me such unbelievable joy. Maybe someday I’ll have the opportunity to be a staff photographer.

I am truly amazed by what I saw during the marathon. It was even more telling when I looked back and viewed the images that I captured. WOW! I may have to plan on running one of these years.

The Boston Marathon 2008 in Natick, Massachusetts

Today I experienced the Boston Marathon 2008 in Natick. This was my first time watching the marathon. I drove down to Hopkington Sunday afternoon to check out the start line and see what was going on. I snapped a few images that I’ll post shortly. Race day came and it was truly exciting. The energy, the people, and the drive to complete 26.2 miles. Wow! I’d love to run it and I hope to someday.

While watching the runners I was very curious to know what their internal conversation was. What they were thinking, feeling, and escaping to throughout the race. I think you can speculate on what was on their mind when looking at the images.

I caught some images of the elite female runners, the elite male runners, the wheel chair participants and the handcycles. The top finishers can be seen here.

Destination Wedding on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line – Day 1 Pre-Cruise

Today I flew to Fort Lauderdale for a destination wedding on the Jewel of the Seas by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. I flew out of Boston and was fascinated by the beautiful sites on the clear blue sunny day. I caught a view of Wickford that I’ve never seen before. I grew up in Wickford and spent many days wandering around the docks playing. I really miss Wickford. It’s a great place to relax and explore. It’s filled with many old homes that are in great condition. I vividly remember my summers at the art festival selling lemonade as a young child. Here’s the view that I saw from my flight from Boston.

I arrived in Fort Lauderdale a day early to ensure a smooth arrival and to accommodate the additional gear arriving on time. I stayed at the Fort Lauderdale Grand Hotel which is undergoing a major 65 million dollar renovation. The hotel is very posh and has a great location near the convention center and the Port Everglades ship departures.

Once I arrived, I called Holly and Josh and let them know I arrived safely. I then proceeded to examine my gear and verify that everything made the trip without any problems. Everything checked out so, I grabbed a camera and proceeded to explore. I stumbled upon an absolutely huge and beautiful sailing ship. It’s called the Meteor and it’s a double masted 170 foot yacht that was absolutely breathe taking. Here’s some of the details that caught my eye.

I continued exploring the area around the hotel and stumbled upon a car auction. I was immediately thrilled. I payed my entrance fee and walked into a plathora of fine vintage automobiles. I was in heaven. I watched the bidding, drank some beers, wandered around, chatted with a fascinating slice of America and enjoyed every second of the experience. Here’s some of the images that captivated me.

Trash The Dress – Tampa Style

I was simply ecstatic to find out that some of my images made the Trash the Dress site! While I was in Tampa for the DWF Convention 2008 a few weeks ago, I tagged along on a Trash the Dress shoot with some of the coolest friends on the planet. It was sort of by accident that I was even involved. Anyways, as usual I shot where no one else was shooting and that was in the cold, muddy area in front of the pier. That’s where the below shot was captured. The image reminds of a snake tongue… so, maybe I can call this one, Tongue in the wind.

Day One with the Shovel

I headed down to Boston for some shovel shooting tonight. Oh btw, Jim and Terry thanks for drunk dialing me at 5am. You two are funnnny. I almost answered. Enjoy the boat! Okay, back to the post. I took the bike down to Boston and shot some pics with the shovel. It was mostly street photography. I stopped by Lansdowne street, Newbury street, and Mass. ave. It was good to get out and do a bit of riding. It’s also really fun to ask strangers to take pictures with a shovel. It just makes me realize how much I love photography and how much I love working with people… I mean the great people of Boston!

Engagment Pictures at The Collings Foundation – Stow, Massachusetts

I recently shot some engagement pictures for a great couple that are both professional pilots. I also completely love airplanes and have flown smaller private planes a few times in my life. My father used to be a flight instructor but, hasn’t flown in long time. I picked up RC flying many years ago and sold most of my RC planes to get into photography.

Back to Jeff and Jessica. We tried to get a shot on a local airport. Either in a hangar or on the flight line. Unfortunately, the security in place doesn’t allow any abiltiy to do this. We went back and forth with locations and each came back as a negative. I then remembered a location that I attended during a CRRC event. This was a private museum that was dedicated to restoring and preserving older aircraft. I called up the Collings Foundation and asked about the possibility of shooting the engagment session at their private hangar. We worked out the times and got approval for the shoot! I was psyched!

Our timeline was pretty tight due to the fact that their wedding was on 5/5 and the shoot took place on 5/1. We shot for several hours in a quite, sunny, and fantastic location. I was psyched just to be there, nevermind shooting a great couple. We had many different aircraft to work with and numerous different non-aircraft locations. It was spectacular! I really enjoyed the shoot but, the pressure was on to get through the images, post them, and order the prints for framing by the wedding day. In the end, Jeff and Jessica were extatic with the results and the framed 16×24 looked great in the 24×36 double matted frame.

The best part of this story is that this was a trade for flight time. We traded the time and framed print for a flight down to Martha’s Vineyard (which I’ve never been to) in a rented Piper Seminole from Executive Flyers Aviation. I’m trying to talk them into Trashing the Dress at the beach when we get there. I’m pretty sure I saw a smile on Jessica’s face when I mentioned it. So, we’ll be flying down to the Vineyard this month, enjoying a great day Dress Trashin, flying, and buzzing some seals.

I was burning time on You Tube tonight and came across my favorite short. This stars Madonna and Clive Owens. It was shot by Guy Ritchie, Madonna’s hubby. He also shot one of my favorite films, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Pretty cool stuff.. you must love the driving in this short though… Wooo Hooo!

After all the rain we had, it’s beautiful to see the sun, the blue sky, and the flowers with the kiss of light. Is spring finally here? This was shot on my ol’20D with a cool little 50mm 2.5 macro lens. I just love the colors of this shot.
