Another New England Snow Storm – Natick, Massachusetts

Today we had another snow storm that was headlined as dropping copious amounts of snow all over New England. As of 6:30 am this morning there was about 5 or 6 inches of snow on the ground. I was awakened by Robert who was heading to work at Mabardy’s down the street. The snow was wet and heavy in the morning which made moving the cars around sorta tough. Especially my little Smart car that’s rear wheel drive. Oy! Once Robert was on his way to work I continued on clearing the drive way. By 7ish am the snow turned to sleet and shortly after it turned to rain.

Midday rolled around and I was itching to take ride around to see what scenes I could capture. A small side note, It would’ve been a great day for a fun engagement shoot or bridal session. Especially since it was fairly warm and overcast. It will happen eventually, I know it will. Back to my story, I drove down Cottage street then headed to Eliot street aka South Natick. I took a few shots of the Sargent Footbridge that goes over the Charles river. Then headed to Elm Bank for a shot in the insanely deep snow with a painful layer of ice on top. From there I headed to Lookout Farm, Pegan Hill (the highest spot in Natick), then back tracked to South street which is adjacent to the Broadmore Wildlife Sanctuary, and finally looping back around to Natick via 27.

What I love about Natick, Massachusetts – A Natick Picture Walk

Yesterday we had another big snow storm in Natick, Massachusetts. Snow totals for the area is at 60.3 inches of snow so far versus the last years season total of 35.7 inches. I’d guess that most would consider this a lot of snow but, for me, it’s just what New England is about and I say whatevah…. you could always move to Florida. With that being said, I enjoy the snow. Though, I do wish I was skiing instead of shoveling. Thankfully New England is prepared for such storms and basically roads/sidewalks are almost completely clear within a day. We have several ride-in snow removal machines for sidewalks and pedestrian access in town. They get cleared by the time the morning rolls around and life is basically unaffected.

Though, I have to say that I’m now starting to get used to this 25 degree weather. Murmuring under my breath, it feels kinda warm. I always find it amazing when I realize how cold it is and how it doesn’t feel as cold as it is. It just goes to prove that we’re able to adapt and function in diverse environments… such as a wedding day!

Here’s some images that I captured while taking a little photo walk yesterday. Sorta like taking time to smell the flowers. Oh.. a quick side note, as I was walking around yesterday I kept thinking this would be awesome with a bride and groom. So, I’m putting out my intention of capturing a couple in the snow. I’m here and ready! Let’s go and capture some great images!!

Today was the 3rd time I shot the Boston Marathon from Natick, Massachusetts. I have to say that shooting the marathon experience is pretty awesome. I’m amazed by the energy, drive, and dedication to compete at this level. Running is just one part of the marathon and obviously it’s the major part but, the wheelchair athletes simply astound me. I can only imagine the stories the coincide with their disabilities but, to come and compete any marathon…. Wow!!! Talkin about the will to continue in life. It only makes it crystal clear that the brain controls our body. Yet, some people let their body control their mind. Congratulations to all the marathoners and I look forward to next year.

Obey Propaganda and Levi’s team up | Obey X Levi’s – NYC

Last year I took a quick ride to NYC to check out the Obey installation and the limited edition run of the Obey X Levi’s clothing. Shepard Fairey and Levi’s teamed up to produce a limited run of shirts, pants, jackets, and prints. Shepard also had a live installation of his hip propaganda artwork and was present for a signing of the limited edition posters. Personally, I really dig the current style of Shepard’s work. The layering of images and the use of the strong graphics with contrasting designs is wickedly cool. I’ve yet to attend a live installation but, I’m hoping in due time to get Shepard’s attention when he’s in Boston to document an install (sans cops and all). I ended up picking up one of the black Obey X Levi’s jackets while I was out there and the set of prints which are proudly framed and hung in my office. Shepard, look me up when your in Boston! It would be great to catchup and document an installation.

Here’s some images that I shot with a tilt-shift lens of the Obey installation at the Levi’s store at Times Square, NYC. I also added a few images from my walk around NYC that day. Photowalking is super fun and so energizing.

Well, it finally happened. I’m now 39 and that much closer to the big 40. I feel like I’ve come pretty far considering the challenges that I faced and quite honestly we all have challenges that we overcome. I’ve learned that life’s challenges will continue but, our ability to handle them in a productive way defines who we are. All in all I’ve had a life full of diversity and humbling experiences. I’m so blessed to have survived the storms and the ability to see through the challenges to emerge a better person. Life is never easy and quite honestly, who wants an easy life? I mean where’s the fun in that? Life is a beautiful blessing and we have the ability to be anything we choose regardless of what the past has presented us. Easy huh!

BTW: Here’s some other people that share my birthday. I think I’m in good company!

I ended up being invited to go skiing in Vermont at Mount Snow and what a fun day it was. This was the first time I skied Mount Snow. The drive was pretty standard, about three hours from Natick. We skied for a half day but, the trails are challenging enough to keep it fun. I even entered the terrain park a few times and made a pass down the half pipe. Emm.. fun! I’m really thinking that I may transition to riding this year. I’ve been skiing since the 3rd grade and have numerous years of skiing under my belt. I’ve even had the privilege of skiing some of the finest northeastern resorts and even skied Snowbird in Utah once. Snowbird was amazing! Where are all my skiing/riding couples? I need to do an engagement session on skis then, maybe a wedding ceremony mountainside followed by a wild snowy reception. Yeah, those are the clients I want. I’m here and willing to capture your mountainside wedding day.

My First Cover Shot! – The Colonnade and The Smart Car, Boston, MA

Last year I had a shoot at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston. The Colonnade wanted a set of images to highlight their recent purchase and marketing of their super cool Smart Car (Otherwise known as the Smart Passion, Smart 451, and just plain old Smaaht Cah). They bought a couple of Smart Cars to offer to their guests during their stay with select hotel packages and to have a sweet way to market their hotel around the city. I approached the project with the idea of the final image being a composite image that was created using the “painting with light” technique. Essentially I set up my camera on a tripod and set the proper exposure. I then hooked up a remote activation device, a Pocketwizard. I then took my hand help flash and connected another Pocketwizard. I walked around the Smart car and created a single exposure with the desired flash on each frame building a group of images that once compiled and Photoshop’d together would yield an image with a look that seems to be lit from many different angles. The final image had some minor post processing to increase saturation and color correction. This process has been popularized by Las Vegas photograper, John Michael Cooper/ALT F. He’s been exploring this technique for the last few years and has taking his concept mainstream. This was my first foray into the process for a commercial client and I’m ecstatic with the results.

Back to the point of the post. Last week as I was checking out twitter I found a post on Twitter by the Colonnade, which happen to be avid social media evangelists. I had the great pleasure and honor to attend the opening of Aria at CityCenter in Las Vegas last year. The 4,004-room Aria Resort and Casino is the crowning jewel of CityCenter. The resort features more than 150,000 square feet of gaming space, 16 restaurants, 10 bars and lounges, a 215,000-square-foot pool area with 50 cabanas and an 80,000-square-foot spa, the largest among MGM Mirage properties. Aria is home to Cirque du Soleil’s newest show, “Viva Elvis,” which takes guests on a trip through Elvis Presley’s life and music. Taking a Leap of Faith

Many people, in heeding the guidance of their souls, find themselves contemplating goals that seem outrageous or unattainable. In the mind’s eye, these individuals stand at the edge of a precipice and look out over the abyss at the fruit of their ambition. Some resist the urge to jump, paralyzed by the gap between their current circumstances and the life of their dreams. Others make a leap of faith into the unknown, unsure of what they will encounter but certain that they will gain more in their attempts than they would bowing to self-protective instincts. This leap can be exceedingly difficult for individuals with control issues because the act of embracing uncertainty requires them to trust that surrender will net them the rewards they seek. Yet when you make a leap of faith, believing without a doubt that you will land safely on the other side, you can accomplish almost anything you set out to do.

There have no doubt been times in your life when you chose to go where the universal flow took you. Yet you may encounter instances in which your objectives require you to step outside of the boundaries of your established comfort zone so that you may freely and actively jettison yourself into a new phase of your life. While you may fear what seems to be the inevitable fall, consider that in all likelihood you will find yourself flying. A successful leap of faith requires your attention, as it is the quiet and often indistinct voice of your inner self that will point you toward your ultimate destination. Understand that the leap across the chasm of ambiguity may challenge you in unforeseen ways but you will make it across if you trust yourself.

If your mind and heart resist, you can dampen this resistance by building a bridge of knowledge. The more you know about the leap you are poised to take, the smaller the gap between “here” and “there” will appear to be. Your courageous leap of faith can lead you into uncharted territory, enabling you to build a new, more adventurous life. Though you may anticipate that fear will be your guide on your journey across the abyss, you will likely discover that exhilaration is your constant companion.”

Yesterday I headed down to Natick Center for our annual celebration and tenth anniversary of Natick Days. The weather was perfect and the festivities were numerous. Natick Days is a festival of entertainment that celebrates our community by providing fund raising opportunities for Natick youth groups and non-profit organizations, and highlights the work of Natick’s service organizations. I arrived early to take in the day and here’s some of the images that caught my eye. Enjoy!

Jaded – The Maidens of Metal – Hard Rock, Boston

How do you ring in your 200th post? With the Bad Ass Maidens of Metal, Jaded!

I was introduced to Hillary the drummer of Jaded from a co-worker at the MathWorks. He asked me last Friday if I’ve ever shot band pictures. I answered, well no not yet but, I’m game. What’s the gig? He said that his cousin was in a metal band and was performing at the Hard Rock in Boston on Saturday night. I paused…. He said, they dress up in leather and chains. I replied, yeah, sounds like fun! Hillary and I connected squared away the 411 and I arrived Saturday night with some ambition and excitement. I was introduced to the rest of the band and I immediately scoped a location to shoot a group shot. I had like 5 minutes to pick my spot and make it work. I shot the group portrait and decided to stay to catch the show. They were opening up for LA Guns, a 80′s rock band as in a big hair band. I was stoked to see the ladies really knew how to bring the power of metal. Oh and did they! I shot some images while they were performing with the my rockin 5d. I used no flash and relied on the trusty 6400iso for all my shoots. I even captured a quick clip of video with the 5d and posted it to youtube. Here’s some of my favorite shots. Additionally, we setup a time to shoot next week to have a bit more time for a group portrait that will bring my creativity together with some seriously smokin performers. Stay tuned for the results!

Also, I shot some images of LA Guns. This was the first time I’ve seen them and though I remember them from high school, I can’t really say I knew a hell of a lot about them but, seriously, these guys rocked! I’ll post their images in the next week or so.

Boston Marathon 2009 from Natick, Massachusetts

Today was the 2nd time I shot the Boston Marathon from Natick, Massachusetts. The marathon experience in Natick is really exciting, emotional, and quite frankly, an life changing event. This year I woke up at 7am, packed my gear in my Smart Car, drove to Natick center, and started out my day with some Dunks! I walked around Natick center shooting images of the setup of the water stations, spectator lines, and support personnel. The first racers blazed through Natick shortly before 10am. The wheel chairs were first which to me is a one of the best highlights of the day. To even race in a wheel chair is a feat in itself. It only proves that people can overcome many things and succeed. The elite woman’s racers were next followed by the elite men’s racers. Both of these gr0ups are harder to shoot due to the enormous support vehicles surrounding them but, I managed to capture some images that I enjoy. The rest of the runners followed. I captured the Hoyt’s as they came through town and a few runners that had partial leg prosthetic. Amazing and inspiring! Here’s a few of the images that I processed so far and I’ll be posting more throughout the week. I’ll finish off with a gallery of all the images as I did last year. The Colonnade hotel has a Smart Fortwo!

I had the distinct pleasure of capturing the Colonnade hotel’s new Smart Fortwo. They have a sweet blue and silver tridion cell hard top Passion with their logo on the side and back. Here’s one of the images in the jumped out at me right away. Just a tease!

I’ve had a little bit more time to work on some of the images for the Colonnade. Their Smart is pretty slick I have to say after spending plenty of time looking it while editing. So, enough said. Here’s a few more that I really like. Long live the Smart!

The above image was shot using a technique that was recently taught at the Very Alt F seminar. It’s called painting with light. The idea is to program the camera to shot a frame every 5 seconds or so. You then walk around the scene flashing the scene when the shutter actuates. Pretty cool hah! The above frame is 8 frames that was painted together in Photoshop. It takes time but, I think the results are worth it.

It’s been pretty cool seeing the curiousity with the Smart. I’ve had so so many people and ask me questions about my little BW cabrio. Yeah, it’s small but, it’s plenty roomy inside and lemme tell ya. After a wedding, heated seats are my best friend. Yeah, you try luggin around a few cameras, lenses, crouching, standing up, crouching, dancing, and just plan ol focused attention… and you’ll know exactly what I mean. Heated Seats Rock! Anyways, yeah the Smart, Love IT! Seriously.

I am truly amazed by what I saw during the marathon. It was even more telling when I looked back and viewed the images that I captured. WOW! I may have to plan on running one of these years.

The Boston Marathon 2008 in Natick, Massachusetts

Today I experienced the Boston Marathon 2008 in Natick. This was my first time watching the marathon. I drove down to Hopkington Sunday afternoon to check out the start line and see what was going on. I snapped a few images that I’ll post shortly. Race day came and it was truly exciting. The energy, the people, and the drive to complete 26.2 miles. Wow! I’d love to run it and I hope to someday.

While watching the runners I was very curious to know what their internal conversation was. What they were thinking, feeling, and escaping to throughout the race. I think you can speculate on what was on their mind when looking at the images.

I caught some images of the elite female runners, the elite male runners, the wheel chair participants and the handcycles. The top finishers can be seen here.
